19 februari 1846 – MINISTER THREATS WITH DUEL WITH MEMBER

Den Haag – After a clash in the House of Representatives between Finance Minister Van Hall and Liberal MP Edmond Van Dam Van Isselt, the Minister challenges the MP to a duel..

The argument was over a letter that the department had or hadn't sent. The MP referred to the letter sent, while the minister denied that the letter was sent. “If such a thing had been said outside this meeting, I would declare it slander!”, cried Van Hall.

During the debate, Van Hall challenged the MP to a duel because he felt his honor had been compromised. As usual (and mandatory) both gentlemen appointed seconds. Fortunately, they were sensible and managed to convince the two ruffs that dueling was not so wise after all. Finally, a written statement, in which the minister admitted that he had no intention of insulting the MP.

In 1854 it almost comes to a duel again, but even then the seconds turn out to be the most sensible.
