ZOETERMEER/THE HAGUE – Zoetermeer will be the new major growth center in the center of South Holland. That's what commissioner De Zeeuw said at the Provincial Council meeting. In twenty years there would be 100.000 people have to live. That is ten times as many as there are now living. Earlier, the plans for a major expansion towards the village of Wilsveen, just east of The Hague, not trough.

With the development of the Growth Core Zoetermeer, there will be more homes for The Hague, suffering from a housing shortage. The Province and the municipality of Zoetermeer are now going to further develop the expansion plans together. It is estimated that there is still room for nine thousand homes on The Hague's land. Neighboring municipalities of Rijswijk and Voorburg can still receive some people in the coming years, but it is not a structural solution.

Plan Wilsveen

The most concrete plan on the table in recent years was the proposal to build a city near the village of Wilsveen. This new city, sandwiched between the A12 and A4 would have five large districts, met 100.000 inwoners. A large city center would come between those five districts.

But Minister Toxopeus finally pushed the plan into the trash two weeks ago. The municipality of The Hague was a great supporter, but national politics did not like the plans. There was also little support from municipalities in the area.

The Province of South Holland was never a great supporter of the Wilsveen Plan. They saw more in the Reijens Plan, which provided for an expansion of Pijnacker, on the other side of the Rijksweg. This brought the growth core a lot closer to Rotterdam.

Hoe ging het verder?

Not much later, the municipality of The Hague will talk to Zoetermeer about the future. A few months later, officials are instructed to work out plans for the growth to a hundred thousand inhabitants. In december 1962 is that plan ready?.

There was even talk of de-annexation, returning land to other municipalities. It didn't get that far in the end. The only thing the municipality still wanted to take over was the Botlek area and the Europoort.

How did Rotterdam solve it then? Agreements were made with neighboring municipalities such as Capelle aan den IJssel, who went on to build a large number of houses.
